More referrals

No more conspiracy loonies in my referrals recently.

But one from Broken Frenship (sic), the weblog of who appears to be a young Chinese girl, who links to a bunch of weblogs of the same tone. The content, style and design of those blogs make them interesting only for a circle of friends with the same inclination. However, they're out there so you might decide to take a look.

Allahu Snackbar*

Blogging Stress

No, I'm not stressed of this hobby - maybe because I proceed at my own pace, and I don't feel any pressure to do differently.

However, there is distress in some zones of the Blogosphere: Steven DenBeste laments the excess of pedantic feedback from his readers, and we might even lose his contribution. That would be too bad, I add.
Iraqi Bloggers Central voted to discontinue activity in protest of the amnesty given to Muqtada Al-Sadr.
Many of my favourite blogs devote great time and effort to the Bush vs Kerry presidential campaign. It's quite interesting, especially considering its potential impact on the War against Radical Islam, but it tends to annoy a bit, when I read about what Kerry did or did not for the nth time.

I think I won't activate comments on my weblog: I don't want to waste loads of time managing comments, keeping at bay stupid and abusive people who can't do anything better than calling names and stuff. How can I say it will be like that? Well, almost any so-called warblog has its fair share of these specimen, so I'm sure I would get mine. But I don't want that; send me e-mails if you really have something useful to say.

In the last few days, Blogger ate up a nice post and some links I added to my blog.
I hope now it's all fine.

The Enemies

Here's a collection of links to the websites of those who are enemies of liberal democracy, rationalism and modernity:

Indymedia

Hamas

Islamic Brotherhood

Anarchist Black Cross Network

Al-Manhaj

Respect

Khomeini

I could go on and on, but I've reached my daily dose of filth. More, and it could start to cause deleterious effects.

Speculating

It's recent news that two passenger planes crashed almost simultaneously in Russia last night. One of the hypotheses is that the planes have been downed by terrorist activities - either bombing, or hijacking, or both, especially considering that people on the ground in the Tula region witnessed the mid-air explosion of the Tu-134 , and one plane (it is unclear which one) sent an emergency - probably hijacking - signal shortly before the loss of radar contact.

Speculation quickly started, like on this thread at LGF. I haven't checked, but rumors are that places like Indymedia went into the wildest conspirational speculations - as they usually do.

There's nothing wrong in speculating and imagining different, even improbable scenarios.
It's a good exercise for the mind, and a lack of imagination can have catastrophic consequences.
But even speculation must never forget the hard facts. One might speculate that those planes were downed using a Zionist Death Ray, but no one has ever seen it for real.

So, what to do about this sad Russian story? Let's just wait for more information and facts to become available, and then express an informed opinion. Saying that certainly was terrorism (or that certainly it was not terrorism) now is premature.

Scienza 1 - Omeopatia 0

Back in the line

Hello my ten readers (there is a citation hidden in here), I'm finally back in London. And the only thing I really like is the fast internet connections. I had too much good time, good company, fine weather and delicious food in Italy to appreciate suddenly the positive aspects of London.

My return trip, in fact, began with one hour and something of delay, and things went downhill: the plane had to circle for a while waiting for a landing slot, but approaching Heathrow from the west I noticed many small lakes close to the airport, and even someone doing water ski! Then we had to taxi around the whole airport, apparently, and after that mishaps just piled up. Net result, I got home about SIX hours later I walked through the security control at Linate.

And this morning at work, no good news. Only the same old slackness and mess-ups.

However, enough of personal rants, and let's move on.

Safe and Sound

Yes, I'm OK.
The last ten days or so have been the Days of Parties, and I spent a long time out, partying.
Moreover, this 56K connection is rather... unsatisfying.

Soon I'll be back in activity, stay tuned.

Slow-pace posting

Tomorrow I'm off for two good weeks of holiday in Italy - it will be wild, as far as my battered 26-years-old body can bear (wink).

I'll also be forced on a 56K dial-up connection, so expect just a few posts in the meantime.

Terror in da hood

Yesterday afternoon London was struck by severe thunderstorms, which left the traffic in a chaos, and some buildings flooded. I let you imagine how was to be in a bus with closed windows, heavy rain and hail outside and stale, sweat-smelling hot air inside...

When the rain ceased, I decided to escape the bust torture and walk the last two kilometers or so to the sports centre in Kensal Green - I did not want to miss my karate class. On the way, I noticed that a shop called Ummah Cola International (Ummah is the islamic nation, the community of Muslims of any nationality) was cordoned off and four police officers were standing in front of it. Small companies run by Muslims have been found associated with terrorists time and again, so it's not the kind of shops I trust more.

During the karate class, I could hear sirens from outside, but I was too concentrated on my practice, and I also thought they were because of the bad weather.

But when I got out the sports centre, I found police closing an area of a few blocks in the surroundings of the sports centre, barely 500 m from my place. Cars could not access the area, and even pedestrians were somewhat restricted. I understood something big was going on, but no one could tell me what - and I was exhausted, in need of dinner and shower.

Then this morning, look what I found in the news!

Armed police carried out a series of raids across Britain to foil a suspected al Qaeda plot to target London. Thirteeen people were arrested in homes in the capital, Luton, Bedford, Bushey and Blackburn.
The operation followed intelligence from MI5 and is believed to be linked to the arrest of an al Qaeda computer specialist in Pakistan. [...]
One witness described 70 officers sealing off streets around an address in Kensal Green. Officers in forensic suits searched a shop in Harrow Road
The Ummah Cola - ed..

Here is the Map of the area: the arrow indicates the approximate location of the Ummah Cola shop; Chamberlayne Road and Kilburn Lane were closed and the junction with Banister Road.

Good, the police nabbed some bastards! Notice how, in the article, there is not a single mention of Islam - not to hurt someone's feelings probably. And the involved people are generically called "asians". For me, asians are far easterners (Chinese), but apparently calling pakistanis Pakistanis is politically incorrect*. Damn political correctness, it is a considerable obstacle in the cultural war of the Free World agains Islamism.

* I cannot be sure all of them were pakistanis, but here "asians" is often used by PC-conscious people to indicate pakistanis, and the intelligence material leading to this operation was seized in Pakistan...

Correction 10/08: The name of the company closed and serached by police is Ummah Cola WORLD WIDE, not International as previously stated.

The end of the draft

A few days ago, on the 29th of July, the Italian parliament approved with a huge majority a law terminating conscription, after almost 150 years of mandatory military (and in recent years also civil, for coscientious objectors) service.

I think it is an important step in an old-school liberal sense, in the sense of giving people more freedom of what to do in and of their lives. I think serving the country is a noble deed, but when one is free to choose wether to do it or not.

There are also more technical reasons to terminate the draft. The era of huge national armies fighting against each other is basically over. Modern military operations require a relatively small force, to be projected at long distance. This force will probably spend a briefly time in heavy fighting against a clearly identifiable hostile force, and longer time in stability and counterinsurgency operations, amidst civilians, in an overall tense and difficult situation.
Those are conditions for strongly motivated and weel trained professional soldiers, who are capable of using properly modern equipment, of dealing without cracking with stress and pressure. Not disaffected and poorly trained conscripts.
The draft also exhausted its function of helping in the formation of a common Italian culture, putting together people from different places: we have TV and Internet for it, now.

Donald Sensing, a man with long military experience in the US Marines Corps, thinks that Italy has excellent armed forces - although undersized. Let's keep the excellence at least, shall we?

So, do you think someone can be against a decision so liberal and intelligent such as this?

Of course: the Green Party abstained from the vote, while Rifondazione Comunista (Communist Refundation) voted against. Why? Well, I think the Association of Non-violent (coscientous) Objectors (you can't be a good leftist if you don't give an absolutely preposterous name to your association...) gives a glimpse of the motivations: they say that now soldiers will be only people who cannot find any other job, and rich guys will never go to war.

This is complete nonsense for various reasons: in recent years, almost anyone who wanted to skip the service found a way to become objector; moreover, people did incredible things (bribery and nepotism surely not excluded) to be declared unfit for military service. Of course, rich people were always in a better position to do these things.
Moreover, it has always been possible to volunteer for the military - my father signed for three years of service and become non-commissioned sergeant. The only big difference is that professional soldiers will be paid much more than the starvation wage of draftees (I'll look for more information about this point, though).
Finally, we can see from the example of other countries whith a professional army that not only poor kids join the armed forces.

This is not being pro-choice, the choice of doing what you want and prefer in your life. This is the Left trying to enforce equality, trying to level to the lowest point and make people sharing misery, not happiness.

Update 02/08: Finally I found an article in english about this story. Herald Sun: Italy End Conscription.
