Ancora Fosforo -

Wellington e Bisquì: grazie a voi!

Ideologia, Democrazia, Strategia -

I Cocked Up

Only now, reading the comments on another blog, I realized I inadvertently activated the comment moderation feature, and thus a certain number of pertinent comments remained stuck in the queue. Now I published them all, and we're back to the usual.

Ancora Fosforo

Credit Where It Is Due

C.J. and R.S. resolved rather gracefully the OSM trademark infringement issue by re-naming their company Pajamas Media - as it was branded initially. And putting a black cross over the OSM logo.

Burn Flame Burn

Ok, it's time to go back to some hardcore technolgy here; enough of blogosphere wars.

The topic now is combustion technology: I attended a lecture by a serious combustion expert, Adam Williams of Leeds University.

Combustion (flame, but not always) is a process very often involved in extracting energy from fuels, be they fossil or otherwise. In order to maximize the amount of usable energy that can be extracted from fuels and at the same time reduce polluting emissions, it is necessary to understand the combustion phenomenon, so that it can be influenced in the desired way.

No big deal, you may think. Wrong.

Volatile substances burn in gas phase, through a series of radicalic chain reactions in which carbon combines with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and hydrogen forms water. If sulphur is present, it will form sulfur dioxide; metals will generally be converted in oxides and phosphorous will form phopshates. A small amount of air or organic nitrogen will also react with oxygen to form nitrogen oxides, and some of the carbon will fail to burn and end up as soot, a mixture of various polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and other substances (among them, the famous fullerenes).

Soot (especially the nanometric particles), sulphur and nitrogen oxides are polluting agents and it is desiderable to minimize their formation; soot also represent wasted carbon and thus a lower efficiency of combustion. There are mathematical model to simulate combustion, and these must take into account reaction nergy and kinetics, flow properties and mass and energy transfer.

In power stations, coal is pulverized and mixed with air before being injected in the combustion chamber, and when coal particle are exposed to the high temperatures in there something quite convenient occurs: the particles melt partially, assuming a sufficiently spherical shape that makes calculations relatively easy. The burning coal particles are transported upward by the flow of hot gases, and when they have burnt conpletely, the denser ashes fall at the bottom of the chamber (there are also other systems to separate fine ashes from the flue gases). Coal combustion is a mature technology, and the best coal-powered power stations have something like 50% efficiency. Biomass is seen by many as a viable fuel to reduce CO2 emissions, and indeed it does so; biomass is already burnt alone or with coal in a number of power stations around the world. The amount of biomass potentially available is huge, but it is also very dispersed.

However, biomass particles have an irregular, elongated shape that makes modelling of their combustion much more difficult, and there is a concrete risk that in conventional combustors a significant fraction of the biomass fuel (say, 1%) may remain unburnt. Considering that a power station can use several hundred thousand tons of fuel per year, even 1% becomes a sizable amount - and all this not to mention other problems like the high humidity content of biomass.

The carbon credits trade created by the Kyoto protocol also has a perverse effect: british power stations burn biomass (presumably wood) imported from Malaysia and olive oil production waste (crushed and pressed olives, a material used as fuel since time immemorial) from Greece, where the strict environmental regulations make its disposal exceedingly expensive. While this system can be economically viable and Kyoto-wise, it's hard to see how all this long-distance shipping of biomass can be truly beneficial to the environment.

Professor Williams suggested the use of very intensive cultivation techniques and/or genetically modified plants in order to boost the production of biomass without having to subtract too much land from the food crops usage, and I think this proposal makes sense: if we want to take the biomass way, we have to do it properly.

Another fuel-saving technological advance is the flameless combustion of natural gas in the reheating furnaces used for still processing. In conventional burners, methane burns in air within a narrow flamefront, where temperature is very high, something like 1500 C: this process produces an irregular temperature profile in the furnace, noise and a higher amount of nitrogen oxides. Instead, when methane is put in contact with air above 850 C (and the composition of the mixture is kept within precise limits by recirculating exhaust gases), a flameless (almost; sometimes green light is emitted) chemical reaction occurs over the entire volume of the chamber producing a much flatter temperature profile, no noise, very little NOx and a sensible fuel saving. The problem of this technolgy is that flameless combustion conditions are unstable; however, methane burners built on this principle are already available.

Combustion processes are here to stay, and it's only in our own interest to make them better.

Update: Quick and unrelated. Dan Darling at WoC has a post dealing with the labels to use in this conflict; I myself posted the second chapter of my short story.

OSM Mania

Hey, writing about the Open Source Media has sensibly increased my traffic (after the WP tempest in a toilet bowl), so why not continue to flog that horse?

Like many others, also this struggle is becoming a three-way one:

Side One - The True Believers: those who think that OSM will succeed because it has to, given that all the Good Guys are there. Examples: the OSM staff and (most) partners, and apparently a good number of LGFers.

Side Two - The Informed Critics: those criticizing (sometimes with caustic irony) the whole OSM policy, business plan (or lack thereof) and decisions in the face of the Trademark Cockup. Examples: SDB, Dennis The Peasant, Darth Misha.

Side Three - The Sneerers: those grilling and slinging mud at OSM because it's a nest of fascist racist neo-con zionists who deserve to suffer and fail. Examples: LGF Watch, LGF Quiz.

Of course these are rather broad generalizations, and there's a number of people that cannot be clearly placed into a precise set (Ann Althouse comes to mind). My take? If OSM does not change course, the Informed Critics will be proven right.

And what about the shockwaves through the blogosphere? There is a sort of idea that blogs are morally superior to the mainstream media. I think this is partly right, because many bloggers write only to express what they think, not with an eye always looking at the cash inflow and the other a how best to pander at some particular group. And usually bloggers are quite transparent regarding their eventual political agendas. Moreover, it is considered very bad manners on blogs to edit published posts and not respond to criticism or discovered errors.

But now OSM is behaving much more like a mainstream media than a blog. So I suppose that many now are thinking "So a pile of green is all it takes to turn these paladins of fairness, honesty and accountability into copies of what they once despised?" (also look at their very strict terms of use). Unless this is straightened quickly, it may have serious long-term consequences.

Rubbernecking

Some of my readers may be aware of the fact that Charles Johnson of LGF and Roger Simon founded and launched a supposedly new, interactive media outlet, made of some 70 associated bloggers (and quite a few big names among them) with the clear intention of challenging the MainStream Media, and making lots of money in the process. This enterprise was called Pajamas Media, and on the day of its official launch in New York it was re-named Open Source Media. I never mentioned it before, because my interest in this whole thing is next to nothing. I am in no way part of PJM or OSM, just for clarity.

Something was already happening under the surface - like a superheated liquid just waiting for a tiny perturbation to erupt into boiling (also check earlier entries on Chizumatic). But things took a morbidly interesting turn on Nov 17th, the day after OSM's launch.

To put it bluntly (English style), those two chaps Charles and Roger totally cocked up, and chose a name for their enterprise that was already taken - entering a trademark infringement issue.
My knowledge of business is very scarce, but in chemical engineering this would be pretty much like designing and using a plant that is an almost exact copy of a patented one, and thus ending up with a patent infringement case.

Now, Charles is the guy who gave a determinant contribution to exposing CBS's fake TANG memo, and justly grilled Rather and Mapes, the "journalists" responsible for that mess. But now that his own company is a mess, what is he (well, the whole OSM staff) doing? Releasing lame-ass explanation and excuses. And even worse, editing these documents after they have been published on the website, in what is also known as "rewriting history", a sin that was believed to be exclusive of the MSM.

Steved says: "Charles Johnson, why are you acting like Dan Rather?"
And Dennis adds: "We'll just say Radio Open Source gave us permission..."

No matter how you try to spin or explain it away, this trademark thing is large-scale, Nimitz-class screwup. Why can't the folks at OSM just be upfront about it, admit they made a mistake and try to fix it? Isn't this how it is supposed to work in the untarnished world of blogs? (But probably admitting that they didn't even do a trademark search would cast them as unrealiable amateurs in the eyes of their potential advertisers).

I'm watching in morbid fascination, like it were the fresh wreckage of a train crash (and I've seen firsthand the wrecakge of a real, big, trainwreck). I'm also afraid that a failure of this blog-media will send powerful shockwaves around the blogosphere.

At Dennis's place I predicted the "OMS Screwup" will be a big thing, and indeed at 00:35 GMT of 19 November 2005, OSM is at the 6th place of Technorati Top Searches.

Update 19/11, 00:56 GMT: Gawd, this post already got 4 (possibly even more) hits. I suspect I opened the classical Can Of Worms - using an angle grinder.

Update 19/11, afternoon: SDB linked me, and I got almost 200 visits today (also M&A linked to my previous article). One of these is from "Palestinian Territory, Occupied", ISP Palestine Telecommunications Company. And how did he (I suppose) arrive here? Well, Googling in Arabic for Chiaki Kuriyama...

Ideologia, Democrazia, Strategia

A Tale

I've got a tale to tell. Wanna read it?

Nah, that's not catchy... I'm writing a short story, sci-fi action set on another planet sometime in the future. It's not pretentious - actually it's meant to be fun and naver take itself too seriously, along the lines of the comic Hitman. There's a bit of anime in that, and even echoes of Peter Hamilton - but of course the bulk is all mine. If you want to read all that, just click on the link above!

Rice = Ilsa

Ilsa is the curvaceous and sadistic protagonist of a couple of disgraceful '70s exploitation movies. The first one is American, She-Wolf of the SS; the other French-Italian, Harem Keeper of the Oil Sheiks (which would be even more fitting to these times, thinking about it). These titles should be in the collection of any serious B-movie fan, by the way.

However, that's definitely not what I think about Condoleeza Rice, but for the usual suspects (not Charles himself, but a quite well defined set of commenters) she and Bush are almost there. The appearance of this hysterical, fanatical, abusive and obsessive gang is probably the main reason that drove me away from LGF (the others being that I have other things to do, and got just plain bored).

Ah well, I'm tired of writing about nasty chemicals and battling mindless fanatics from either side. Let's look at some exposed skin instead!

Kate Winslet, who is a curvy redhead. My second favourite type of woman...

Update 16/01/06: I found a review of Ilsa. If you dare...

Ed Ora, un Poco di Chimica

FOSFORO

Simbolo: P
Gruppo: 15
Numero atomico: 15
Massa atomica: 30.97

Forse ustioni superficiali, in certe condizioni.

Statement and Proof

Besides all the technical considerations and the useless discussion with many on the Left, what was the point of the RaiNews documentary?

That the Americans used prohibited chemical weapons during the Battle of Fallujah, and this resulted in massive casualties among civilians.
And to prove this statement, the documentary features some explosion footage, the images of decomposing corpses and the statements of a fallujahn doctor and an ex-US Marine.

But in reality, these aren't proof of the statement above.

First of all, WP (and napalm) are not prohibited chemical weapons. You can think that using WP is evil, but it is still leagal under all the treaties that the USA is part of. So no prohibited chemical weapons here, unless you reserve yourself the right to redefine international treaties as you please at each given moment.

The explosion footage isn't damning evidence either. The idea that loose WP was dropped manually from helicopters is too ridiculous to be taken into consideration. An Italian blogger did some research, and found that the images in the documentary are remarkably similar to the pictures of exploding M825A1 smoke shells.
Moreover, the publicily available US Artillery Doctrine states clearly that WP munitions can be used to drive hostiles out of entrenched positions. No secret weapon at all.

Regarding the corpses, callous as it may seem showing two dozens dead does not demonstrate that hundreds or thousands were actually killed. It's simple mathematics: 24 ≠ 3000. And if we want to go to the bottom of it, we cannot be sure that all of those deads were civilians, and also the type of injuries they have is not really consistent with the use of incendiary weapons - some even present other kind of injuries, which are more likely the cause of death (like missing arms). Some of those people may have died as result of inhalation of phosphorous smoke, but that is not immediately evident.

Indeed, the witnesses confirming these stories come one from the Studies Centre of Human Rights in Fallujah, while the other is an ex-Marine turned anti-war activist - who even reported what is called hearsay, not things he actually saw. I think that the credibility of the second source is seriously impaired; the first one I don't know, but the whole thing sounds just like another anti-american enterprise. Isn't it at least remotely possible that some Sunnis may have a vested interest in making the Americans look bad? Apparently, for the Left only White Western Males are capable of lying; anyone else is always, in any circumstance, honest-to-goodness.

Ah well, whatever. Enjoy this recipe, if you like, and welcome the new entries: Dennis the Peasant and Wellington.

Words in Vain

The main reason I do not like to write about the alleged war crimes committed during the Battle of Fallujah (and Abu Grahib before) is that discussing these episodes is largely an exercise in futility, not a constructive, productive discussion.

Most of the anti-war types have already taken - a priori, almost axiomatically, the position that the War Against Radical Islam should have never been fought in the first place. Their motivations may vary: some think that fighting is always wrong no matter what; others think that we should understand the "why they hate us"; finally, certain are just anti-American and think that America should take all the clubbing and never fight back.

Whatever the reason, all of them do not want to engage in an earnest discussion about what happened in that particular case, and how this war can and should be fought. No, what they do is using those allegations as the latest set of excuses to reinforce their positions.

The telltale sign is that pacifists & co. never accept to eventually lose a rethorical argument, but instead they move goalposts and use the whole arsenal of intellectual dishonesty. Indeed, the notorius RaiNews documentary does a rather poor job of demonstrating that "chemical weapons" have been used in Fallujah, but it does not matter, because it must be true.

The idea that an incendiary burning at high temperature can "melt" skin but leave clothes intact is patently absurd? It does not matter; Americans are bad.

The corpses shown in the documentary do not bear much signs of thermal damage (rather, spontaneous decomposition in a warm and dry climate)? It does not matter; Americans are bad.

WP and napalm are not classified as chemical weapons (the use of napalm is restricted by the Geneva Convention, tho)? It does not matter; Americans are bad.

How are field commanders supposed to defeat dug-in ruthless, fanatical warriors without sending their own men to suicide missions? We do not care; Americans are bad.

This is a war, not a peace & love party. Some brutality is inevitable. The war was based on false premises; Americans are bad.

It's terrible, but collateral damage cannot be avoided - however, the US military is doing its best to minimize it. Think about the children; Americans are bad.

This is the general tone of the discussions on the subject I've seen up to now. I've even seen a desperate p-idealist* telling me that she "refutes the principle of force". And so what? In the real world force is effective, no matter what your opinion in regard is. And imagining a world without the use of force will not change the reality.

And I really had enough of this crap. If comments of that tone will eventually pop up here, I'll soon go nuclear on them.

For a pragmatist like me, the whole discussion about war is based on entirely different axioms. In this case, 9/11 made painfully clear that Islamism is a threat to the West that cannot be ignored. In the long term, the solution to this problem is memetic (they have to change their minds, in short), but in the short run the less worse of an array of bad solutions is to bring war to them before they can bring war to us. Once you're committed to war, the first and foremost obligation is to win it. I still think that this is no reason to happily slaughter and brutalize any Arab or Muslim in sight, but the eventuality of civilian casualties is not reason enough to restrain from the use of military force.

To produce zero collateral damage, we'd have to use absolutely suicidal and ineffective tacticts - at that point, it'd be better not to fight at all (and this is the pacifists' objective).
In a sense I think that we Westerners should be held to a somewhat higher standard that the jihadis. But many critics of OIF hold the Coalition to absurdly high standards - while the jihadis are hold to standards Our Sanctimoniouses wouldn't tolerate in a guard dog.

The use of napalm and WP as an incendiary on dug-in enemy combatants is legitimate by all international treaties, and is also perfectly moral for me. But FAE munitions are somewhat more cool.

In passing, I'll say that I disagree vehemently also with those religous folks who think that Muslims can and should be exterminated because they are evil, given that they worship a different god.

Update 12/11: QandO has more analysis of the WP incident, and Tigerhawk writes at length on the anti-war crowd.

*P-idealism is thus defined: "One of the ways in which this all ultimately manifested was in the basic philosophy of idealism, which posits that the mind is the essential and central force in the universe. There are various ways this plays out; one extreme form is a kind of limited solipsism which says that reality is in fact whatever we believe it to be, and that there is no actual "objective" reality. But in less extreme forms, this still places the mind at the center of the stage."

E scoppia in lacrime.

Playing With Incendiaries

If there is a non-story that I feel little inclined to write about, is the current tempest in a toilet bowl regarding the alleged use of "chemical weapons" in Fallujah (by the Americans of course; if the jihadis killed thousands with iprite, it would only gain a few raised eyebrows).

However, as Douglas Kern says, "The Internet gives liars and rumor mongers a colossal space in which to bamboozle dolts of every stripe -- but it also provides a forum for wise men from all across the world to speak the truth. Over the long run, the truth tends to win. This fact is lost on critics of the blogosphere, who can only see the exaggerated claims and gossip. These critics often fail to notice that, on the 'net, the truth follows closely behind the lies. A great many of us accept Internet rumors and hoaxes in exchange for fast access to the truth."

Out of sense of duty and allegiance to the Truth, I decided to write something about it, starting with two of my oldtime passions: military science and nasty chemicals.

Fire has always been used as a weapon: Sun-Tzu already discussed the military application of fire; the ancient Greeks and Romans used incendiary mixtures not very dissimilar to today's napalm - and so on. Fire is effective because it kills people, destroys building and vehicles, it is easy to generate and spreads spontaneously. And if you've ever seen a sizable fire up close, you'll know it is goddamn scary.

During World War I a military problem emerged: how to take out entrenched troops? Fire was an obvious response (and later poisonous gases), but if you fill a canister with gasoline, fit an igniter to it and drop the whole thing from a plane, upon impact the canister will rupture dispersing a great part of the gasoline as fine droplets that will burn very quickly; the gasoline still in liquid form instead will rapidly flow away from vertical or sloping surfaces, thus reducing the effectiveness of the fire. A lousy firebomb.

So someone came out with the idea of adding a thickener or jelling agent to the fuel in order to make it more viscous and sticky. Such a mixture sticks to all surfaces (people too) and burns for longer, maximizing the effectivness. The first thickener used for this purprose was sodium (symbol Na) palmitate, and so napalm was born (sodium palmitate and closely related chemicals can be found in common bar soap, so guess what yours truly did when he was young and wild...). Napalm is also useful in flamethrowers, because a more viscouse liquid can form a longer cohesive jet. Nowadays, jelled fuels are generally a mixture of gasoline, polystyrene and some benzene to improve the solubility of polystyrene. Napalm does not ignites spontaneously, and firebombs contain an appropriate igniter to start the fire. So yes, the Mk77 firebomb is a "napalm" bomb - but I can't see how using it against enemy forces is a war crime in itself. Napalm in itself is somewhat more toxic than gasoline; when it burns it produces soot and fumes that are as toxic as any hydrocarbon soot and fumes.

It is plain obvius that napalm is rather nasty stuff - I think that no-one lists being burned alive as a "good" way to die. But I think a lot of napalm's reputation comes from the notorious Vietnam War footage of a child running away with her back horribly burned by napalm (by the way, that child survived and last time I've heard about her, she was living in the USA). However, also standard HE munitions can and will cause horrific injuries, not to mention fires of any kind (put your hand on a wooden fire, if you don't believe me).
Nowadays, napalm is not used very often anymore: besides its bad reputation, there are anti-personnel cluster bombs, FAE munitions and precision munitions to do the same job.

Phosphorous is produced by the reduction of its ores in electric furnaces with coal, and is an element with numerous applications.White phosphorous (WP) is the α-allotrope of phosphorous: a white or yellow waxy solid, very toxic by ingestion or inhalation of vapours, which has the property of igniting spontaneously in air above 30 C; WP is normally stored under water to isolate it from air.

When ignited, phosphorous burns fiercely with a bright light, and producing a dense smoke of P2O5 and ortophosphoric acid droplets that is effective for visible and IR screening, and disrupting targeting lasers. For these reasons, WP is used militarily for illumination flares and smoke grenades or shells. In particular, the M825 smoke shell contains WP-soaked felts. WP has been used also as incendiary, because it will set fire to all flammable materials it contacts (also clothes).

Burning particles of WP will embed themselves into human flesh and continue to burn until they are in contact with air: WP is nasty stuff as well, but not banned by any treaty.

While I (fortunately) cannot vaunt experience with burnt corpses, I can state that flesh does not melt. Fat can melt, but flesh eventually burns and chars.

Update 11/11: After some research, I found one impact-bursting WP munition used by the US Military: it is the 60mm mortar cartridge M722, which as FAS states is used for marking/spotting purposes - in other words, to mark a target for an airstrike or artillery fire. Reports from Fallujah state that WP rounds have been used to drive enemy combatants out of their defensive positions.

Besides the linked papers, more information on phosporous come from the book "Hazards in the Chemical Laboratory", S.G. Luxon, Royal Society of Chemistry, Cambridge, 1992.

Babes Worldwide

In the continuing saga of my traffic reports, Chiaki Kuriyama is still the star.

But what is more interesting is that people all over the world are very interested in this skinny-but-cute Japanese girl.

Recently I got some visits from Iran - yes, that (supposedly) beacon of Islamic virtues - searching for Chiaki (and Maggie Cheung) pics. Not mention people from Indonesia and other countries with governments known for frowning upon exposed skin.

I'm glad about this, really. Not only for the traffic, but also because it means progress in the memetic war we're fighting. Each time an Iranian guy looks at Chiaki, he will think that burqa-clad women really suck.

In the words of SDB: "You'd think that Those Who Lead Us would have figured this [That people like sex - ed.] out a long time ago, but they're in denial. Kuwait, for instance, authorized the creation of a series of "Internet Cafes", places where those who didn't have their own connections to the net could go to plug in. Then they found out that a lot of the people (i.e. men) going there were hunting for porn (which is, of course, readily available online).
The authorities in Kuwait were scandalized and have closed 50 of said internet cafes. What, exactly, did they expect, anyway? Huge numbers of people reading online copies of the Q'uran?
If we can't beat Islamicism with rock-and-roll, we'll beat it with pictures of bare breasts."

More Tidying Up

First, I decided to exit the Euroblogs Webring: it did not bring me any noticeable traffic, and it's only taking up useful space on the sidebar. So, sayonara.

I also put a couple more suspended blogs in the proper category, and added Ace of Spades HQ (of the big names out there) who has been kind enough to link me.

Update 10/11: Funny, the TTLB Ecosystem says that I have a link from Ace, but I cannot find it on that website. Mysteries of the 'Net.

Big Trouble

I haven't written anything about the Muslim revolt in France because I find that situation seriously disturbing. I am really worried.

There are some thugs like those in London too, but this is not the main problem.

The problem is that this revolt aims at estabilishing zones in which the French State would have no more sovereignity, and instead sharia/tribal code will be the law of the land. This kind of disgregation is the trademark of failed states, and if that were to happen in an European country, it would mean serious trouble. Also Muslims/North Africans in other countries may start to revolt against the State (and they're already doing it, on a small scale).

The response (or lack thereof) of the French government is nearly maddening: eleven nights of things going from bad to worse and there seems to be no adjustement of tactics by the French security forces. I don't believe they are so spineless; it must be a political decision not to do what is necessary now - use overwhelming force to estabilish order (only today one single mayor declared some form of curfew).

Still, the solution has to be political. But not a compromise with the imams; rather the whole sick socialist system, with its generations on the dole and inhuman housing projects, must be dismantled. Otherwise, there is no way out of the hole:
As long as France is an independent nation, with an independent economy and exclusively dependent on its own tax base, France is doomed. France as we know it is unsustainable. The structural and demographic problems France faces probably can't be solved short of violent revolution. The European Union may be seen in Paris as the only hope they have of escaping the trap France is in, as long as the ultimate EU system was designed correctly to make sure the French had disproportionate power in it and could thus manipulate it for the French's economic benefit. If so, they would be willing to go to nearly any lengths to make sure that the EU happened, and to make sure it was dominated by France.

All the other explanations I've come up with for French behavior were unsatisfying; they didn't seem sufficient to explain their behavior, or their apparent desperation and ruthlessness. But this one would do it; if this is what they're thinking, then they really would be willing to do the kind of things they have been. For this they'd be willing to sacrifice the UN, willing to sacrifice NATO, willing to alienate the US. For this they'd be willing to make oil deals with a torturer and sell him illicit goods, and to work to maintain him in power so he could keep torturing to his heart's content. For this they'd be willing to partner with Russia and China. For this they'd be willing to do damned near anything. The only thing that would matter would be to make sure that the final establishment of the European Union happened and that France would have the ability to dominate it. If they win that, they win everything. If they lose that, nothing else matters.
I think this is a defining moment not only for France, but for all Europe too. Lines must be drawn, and those trespassing be dealt with accordingly. If not, we're going towards a very dark future.

Better later than never; I had to wait to be on a DSL connection again. The banner says "Iran Embassy (in Rome - ed.). This blog is there." It is a manifestation in support of Israel proposed and organized by Giuliano Ferrara, an Italian conservative and editor of the newspaper Il Foglio. There is no doubt for me that Israel is orders of magnitude better than Iran and the whole lot of Islamic extremists, and thus deserves full support. I couldn't be there materially, but ideally I am in the manifestation.

Update 22:00 CET: Italian press is reporting 1500 people manifesting pro-Israel in Milan and 10 000 - 15 000 in Rome. Also many people from the center-left area are attending the demonstrations - most notably Piero Fassino; some progressive Iranians and Muslims can also be seen in the crowd with banners and signs.

The genocidal declarations of Ahmedinejad caused a number of strong reactions in Italy: the Foreign Minister Fini defined Iran a serious threat and has not backed down despite the high-piteched whines vibrant protests from Iran; the minister Calderoli said Ahmedinejad is a madman in need of treatment; the Minister of Culture Buttiglione added that Iran and a large fraction of Muslims want to complete the Holocaust. Not to mention the mole of material written on the issue by the Tocqueville bloggers.
