Girls with M4s

Raven 42 (a company, I suppose; correct me if I'm wrong) is part of the support troops of the American army in Iraq. Made in great part of MPs and medics, they are not supposed to face intense combat.

Yet they did, and they won. Sgt. Leigh Ann Hester in particular dispatched four insurgents by herself with aimed shots.

Complotti a Go Go

Come ci spiega Wellington traducendo Daniel Pipes:

Worthy News

Iranian university students are protesting against the regime - which predictably is cracking down hard, a blogger reports.

I have the distinct sensation that this story will hardly make the headlines, and only a few human rights advocates will speak up in righteous indignation. Will the UN ask Iran to cease the repression, much like they asked the USA to close Camp X-Ray? I doubt, but I'd like to be proven wrong.

Sadly, I can't do much to support these protesters besides helping to spread the story of their struggle. Except maybe another maling campaign. Anyone to get onboard?

Notizie Abbastanza Buone

Stay Afloat

Just found a most strange search phrase in my referrals: "steel is much denser than water.in view of this fact, how do steel ships float ?"

Now, this isn't as laughable as it may seem. And I like to provide scientific information to my readers, so here we go.

Ships float because they're for the most part empty; basically a shell around a large cavity. This makes the overall density of the ship lower than that of water.

Let's make an example.
A steel cube weighing 100 tons will have a volume of approximatively 15 cubic meters, and will definitely sink in water. However, if we take 100 tons of steel plates and with that we build a ship with an internal volume of 250 cubic meters (that would be a 10 x 5 x 5 meters cuboid, not a big ship), we obtain an overall density of 0.4 ton/cubic meter: much less than water. We could even load another 100 ton of cargo in that ship.

And let's not forget that nowadays many boats and small ships have fiberlgass-resin composite hulls, which are even less dense than steel.

Human Rights Madness

In the last two or three years I concluded that the scope and reach of "human rights" have been inflated to absolutely ludicrous proportions, especially in Europe.

The first nefarious consequence is that rights are cheapened and demeaned this way. If you consider the Bill of Rights, for example, you will see that it deals with a few fundamental rights, so important that were taken out of the normal political process and put at the foundations of the country. But when even the most trivial issues are granted the status of human rights, they become meaningless and end up unduly limiting liberties. For example, someone else's hypothetical right to scream aloud at night (to express themselves or somesuch) under my window would interfere wih my liberty to sleep as I see fit.

As another consequence, this human rights madness can become truly dangerous:
Home Office records show that nearly a quarter of the 963 people arrested in counter-terrorism operations in England and Wales since September 2001 have claimed refugee status, saying their human rights would be violated if they returned to countries such as Algeria, Iraq and Somalia.

While their applications are processed, all are entitled to state benefits such as free housing and legal aid to pursue their claims that they would be persecuted in their home countries.
People strongly suspected of hostile activities get the right to stay and even receive benefits. This is madness.

I think that terrorism suspects (and jihadis in particular) should be handled by special courts, and what is better between immediate deportation and special regime (Guantanamo) detention is open to debate.

In more general terms, if you are engaged in hostile activities against your host country, you can kiss your rights goodbye. No ifs or buts: there's a war going on.

More Logs Stuff

This is weird: I'm getting a few pretty long visits from the domain integritycorporation.com (Texas, USA), that corresponds to this website: a marketing/brand consulting company.

The link is to my "digital guerrilla" article (in Italian), but I can't see the referral. I'd like to know why my modest blog caught the eye of what apparently is a big business name.

Nuclear Waste Disposal 1

I borrowed a book on the subject from the library and I' more than halfway through it:

Neil A. Chapman, Ian G. McKinley
The Geological Disposal of Nuclear Waste
John Wiley & Sons, 1987, ISBN 0 471 91249 2

The book is rigorous yet not exceedingly complex (it carefully avoids matemathical treatment, among other things), so much it can be understood almost in full even by people without considerable scientific knowledge.

For me, it did not provide any revolutionary information given that everything can be worked out from the basic laws of chemistry, physics and heat/mass transfer, but I learnt some interesting things about the details of nuclear waste disposal nonetheless.

However, the basic concept behind this activity, like many others, is risk management. It is unrealistic to ask for zero risk (of exposure to radiations, or of dying while driving to work); the only thing that can be done is to reduce the risk to reasonable levels. What is a reasonable level is a debatable subject, but considering the natural backgroud and other sources, one death per year in 100 000 people is considered a reasonable level (As Low As Reasonably Achievable). And risks must always be weighted against the elephant in the room: the fact that the world needs electricity, and not just for electric orange-squeezers, but also and mainly for more basic and even life-saving applications (how many lives have been saved by food conserved properly in fridges?).

The other conclusion is that we have the knowledge and technology to build nuclear waste repositories that are safe, for million of years and in any case except catastrophic cataclysms - which would be much more destructive in themselves than the release of radionuclides from the repository.

But today I received bad news on the personal side that sapped my morale, so more on this subject will follow in the near future.

Giorno-L

Quindi, scriviamo a: relazioni.pubblico@esteri.it. 18:50 GMT: Io ho mandato le mie lettere. Voi?

Liberare Alaa: Guerriglia Digitale

Contatti:
Roma - Villa Savoia, via Salaria 267
Tel. 06/44234764 - 06/8440191- 06/84241896
Fax. 06/8554424 - 06/85301175
Email: ambegitto@pelagus.it

Alpitour - adriano.rosso@alpitour.it
Valtur - scrivi@valtur.it; 02 30099811
Costa Crociere - info@costa.it; 800 532853
Domina Hotels&Resorts - info@dominahotels.it; 02 550041

21:35 GMT: Anche Sgembo e Lisistrata sono con me. 13/05: Pure No Way.

25 000!

I just got my visit number 25 000. Yeah, I know, not much for two years of activity. But I tried, posting skin pics and dirt. Whatever.

Visitor 25 000 comes from Oregon, USA, Oregon State System of Higher Education, and was searching for "cia world facts". Congratulations, you win an used PTFE gasket.

I want to write a more scientific post about the issue of nuclear waste disposal, but because it's not my field I need more documentation. Wikipedia is a non-starter, and even if I'm quite sure there are good documents online, I'll get a book on the subject. This project will take a little while tho.

Not Solving the Problem

Today's media report yet another turn of the horrific Palestinian carousel: the USA accepted the proposal of the other three members of the infamous Quartet (UN, EU, Russia) and agreed to aid the Palestinians, after foreign aid was cut off following the electoral victory of Hamas.

But only for humanitarian reasons; to provide services and pay the salaries of doctors and teachers for a limited period of time. Yeah, right.

On of the reasons that made the Palestinian problem so long-lasting and inextricable is that the "international community" since 1948 at least always, always saved the Palestinians' hide when they ended up in a tight spot. Israel was stopped while winning wars and condemned for military actions that, while not gentle, aren't atrocities by any means; the Palestinians instead have received hefty sums of money and political support, inconditionately (this is more the result of very postmodern and postcolonial white guilt and simpathy for the underdog, rather than anti-semitism). Only in the last few years the USA, and the EU much later, have found firmer stance against the Palestinian atrocities.

So, the Palestinians never really had to bear responsibility and carry the weight for their dissennate choices. Only Israel tried something to make them face reality, but only to be hamstrung by the "international community". The Palestinians lost more than one war, but they still behave like they actually won, or at least scored a draw. Against how things have been since time immemorial: the loser has to accept the conditions of the winner.

This discussion is not about rights or international law. It is realist and pragmatist, and thus about power, about intentions and capabilities. The Palestinians set for themselves unreasonable (or barely reasonable) objectives like the "Right of Return": short of some huge change of ideology, Israel isn't going to accept it, no way. Moreover, the strategy and tactics used by the Palestinians are overly inept: bloody, brutal violence; often pointless and self-serving and within a context of gangs and factions trying to outdo each other without any organic plan or timeline for action. A total mess, an utter fuckup as an important ex-blogger once wrote. And on top of that, Arafat and his ilk skimmed off plenty of foreign aid to build their own riches - leaving the commons just enough to float above abject poverty. Because abject poors have nothing to lose and would possibly revolt, and prosperous citizens rapidly lose their martial spirit (with notable exceptions, of course). An important point of Palestinian internal propaganda was, and still is, that once Israel is destroyed everyone will be happy and rich.

Though, the Arabs of the area handled the propaganda part pretty well, and managed to rally a sizable consensus and support in the West, especially Europe (the situation is more complex, because at a certain point the Soviet Union became pro-Arab and turned its massive propaganda and indoctrination potential in that direction). I think that anti-semitism and anti-semitic propaganda are interlocked in a vicious circle: the former is fertile ground for the latter, but when candid people are exposed to unrelenting propaganda, will easily become anti-semites in turn. I mean, if the Israelis truly were vicious, genocidal baby-killers aversion would be justified.

Avoiding to de-stabilize "Palestine" is a ridiculous excuse. It is an abortion of a state, failed even before being born; loosely kept together only by the opposition to Israel. The Palestinians have to learn to bear responsibility for their decisions before any real solution can be found. But always bailing them out goes in the opposite direction.

Modifiche

"video shock nassiriya" (interbusiness.it, Campania)

The Negative Power of Myth

Lee Harris writes:
Sorel's response to Renan's comment is not to say, "Renan is wrong; there is a socialist solution, and one day we will find it." Instead, he focuses on the fact that socialists gain their strength precisely from their refusal to recognize that no socialist solution exists. "No failure proves anything against Socialism since the latter has become a work of preparation (for revolution); if they are checked, it merely proves that their apprenticeship has been insufficient; they just set to work again with more courage, persistence, and confidence than before...." But what is the point for Sorel of this refusal to accept the repeated historical failure of socialism? Here again, Sorel refuses to embrace the orthodox position of socialist optimism; he does not say, "Try, try, try again, for one day socialism will succeed." Instead, he argues that it is only by refusing to accept the failure of socialism that one can become a "true revolutionary." Indeed, for Sorel, the whole point of the myth of the socialist revolution is not that the human societies will be transformed in the distant future, but that the individuals who dedicate their lives to this myth will be transformed into comrades and revolutionaries in the present. In short, revolution is not a means to achieve socialism; rather, the myth of socialism is a useful illusion that turns ordinary men into comrades and revolutionaries united in a common struggle - a band of brothers, so to speak.

Sorel, for whom religion was important, drew a comparison between the Christian and the socialist revolutionary. The Christian's life is transformed because he accepts the myth that Christ will one day return and usher in the end of time; the revolutionary socialist's life is transformed because he accepts the myth that one day socialism will triumph, and justice for all will prevail. What mattered for Sorel, in both cases, is not the scientific truth or falsity of the myth believed in, but what believing in the myth does to the lives of those who have accepted it, and who refuse to be daunted by the repeated failure of their apocalyptic expectations. How many times have Christians in the last two thousand years been convinced that the Second Coming was at hand, only to be bitterly disappointed -- yet none of these disappointments was ever enough to keep them from holding on to their great myth. So, too, Sorel argued, the myth of socialism will continue to have power, despite the various failures of socialist experiments, so long as there are revolutionaries who are unwilling to relinquish their great myth. That is why he rejected scientific socialism -- if it was merely science, it lacked the power of a religion to change individual's lives. Thus for Sorel there was "an...analogy between religion and the revolutionary Socialism which aims at the apprenticeship, preparation, and even the reconstruction of the individual -- a gigantic task."
He expresses in a much better form things that I've been pondering for quite a while too. Why the fanatical, steadfast attachment to lost causes? Because it gives satisfaction to an inner urge, that's why.

The open scenarios are thus not comforting at all. If it's true that only a myth can defeat another (or even worse, only a fanaticism can defeat another), then dark times lie ahead - times of uncompromising conflict and war.

We pragmatist, skeptics, and a whole lot of "moderates" from many sides are trying to make reason and rationality prevail, but it may be that humans are hardwired to need myths. The black flag shall be hoisted again?

O quantomeno detenzione dura a tempo indeterminato - come é consuetudine in guerra.

Conundrums

I haven't much inspiration to write another juicy sci-tech post, so I'll just rag a little more about Little Green Footballs. Ready?

The fact is, an Islamic court in Somalia sentenced a murderer to be publicily stabbed to death by the 16-year-old son of his victim.

As you can see in the comments, a nutrite number of LGFers are thus facing a serious conundrum:

So you can see a number of posters trying to jump through nanosized rethorical hoops in order to have it both ways. It's fun, in a weird way. But it becomes grotesque when the infamous American Idiot, herself an unabashed supporter of torture and wannabe torturer, has problems with this method of execution - and even says that she can't think of baby seals being clubbed to death. That's coherence for you.

Rally and Stand

Via Silent Running, here comes this story: an American blogger is being sued for unveiling a long story of incompetence and dubious practices regarding an internet advertisement camapaign for the state of Maine - the highlight being a phonesex number placed in one of these ads.

So we have an individual - a free man, I may say - being squashed by an unhealty association of bureaucracy and corporate interests. Lance is fighting back with the help of a couple of high-caliber attorneys, but the more this story is exposed to the public, the better. There are people who won't take any of this kind of bullying, and they will rally and stand when called.

Scientific Divulgation

I took a short break from blogging and other intellect-intensive activities, and now I'm ready to shoot my guns again! Fire in the hole!

There is a rather diffuse opinion that many scientific conclusions aren't really definitive and will change with the current fads and trends, much like winter coats. And if scientists can't even tell definitively whether coffee is good or bad for you, how could we trust them about evolution?

The reason for these popular opinions is sloppy scientific divulgation, rather than bad research and science in itself (some researchers are to blame, tho). The bottom line is that the avere journalist is deeply ignorant of scientific and technical matters - and not just of selected advanced issues, but they are ignorant about the fundamental principles and laws of nature. Knowledgeable journalists are few and far between exceptions.

This is the main reason that makes most scientific stories published on the mainstream media almost painful to read for someone with a solid scientific and technical formation. Specialistic publications such as New Scientist are much better, even if not immune from political slant.

Add to that the general features of the media, and what we have is that most "scientific" divulgation is focused on what is artificiously controversial, sensational, worrisome and/or horrific. It makes no news to talk about uncertainties, extrapolations, modelling and all the real issues that researchers have to face: it's too complex; the journalists themsleves often do not understand the problem and have a word limit. So the headline is often positive and absolute; doubts and criticism are eventually buried in some paragraph a long way down. Sci-tech ignorant people don't know the real extent of their ignorance; they don't know the proper questions to ask and thus get useless answers.

Returning to our coffee example, anyone sufficiently familiar with critical thinking will know that the question of whether coffee is good or bad is meaningless. Why? Because the reality is much more complex.

The first thing notice is that the dose makes the poison. The chemical agent Sarin is not lethal at minuscule doses, while even too much spring water can kill. A little caffein will keep you awake and sharp, but too much has a bad effect on the nervous and cardiocirculatory systems. What is the exact safe dose varies greatly from individual to individual, and with their general health situation. Coffee does not contain only caffeine, but also other substances with their own series of effects.

The second, and most important, point is that it's a matter of tradeoffs, not absolutes. Nearly all substances one can assume have a range of effects, some beneficial (or at least pleasant...) and some nocive. As a general rule, there are very few substances that are exclusively nocive, and none that is exclusively beneficial. Anti-cancer drugs tend to cause severe side effects, but they can save one's life. That's a most dramatic tradeoff, but even the common paracetamol has counterindications - and one of its metabolic degradation products is highly toxic.

So the correct answer to the above question is "A moderate consumption of coffee is unlikely to produce adverse health effects, and can even be beneficial in specific cases". Yes, it sucks as a headline. See the problem?

The media are often infatuated with the evolutionary "missing links" too. The mistake in this case is to think that evolution goes through a series of linked discrete steps, and if one is missing the whole chain is broken. But this is not the case; evolution actually proceeds through small incremental changes - on a timescale so long that human minds can hardly conceive: a human life is about a century long, and a generation 25 - 30 years. Evolution works patiently but unrelentingly through millennia, and during this time species change slowly and gradually until new ones appear. It's a continuum, not a chain or even less a ladder.

I see no easy solution to the problem of poor scientific divulgation. The "old" media will not easily change their business model and editorial lines, even feced with the competition of the "new" media (which most often are more interested in politics rather than science). The other ugly truth is that a great part of the public is desperately ignorant of science and technology, and does not know how to think critically. Scientific instruction must proceed from the basics upwards; otherwise the most novel discoveries and hypotheses will be lost out of context. One cannot grasp why it is so difficult to produce and use energy with a high level of efficiency without knowing thermodynamics. Instead, there are plenty of people who think that "hydrogen" is actually the solution to the world's energy problems.
