Microfosforonde

Non so esattamente cosa stesse cercando.

The Clash of Extremes

I was reading the latest piece by Dennis the Peasant in his series of harsh but hilarious criticism of Pajamas Media, and I found some comments by hard-left types (that Dennis did not deliberately take on board).

What I found is: all Little Green Footballs readers are arab-killing-fascisto-jingoists-greedy-capitalists. And fat and stupid, of course.

Pajamas Media? It cannot be an amateurish business, but it must be Rovian Propaganda.
Tech Central Station is paid to write "war propaganda".

You know what, it's true that there is a number of despicable folks on LGF who fit quite well the description given above. And I've been in many comment board dust-ups with them. But there are also folks who are quite pleasant, and I can get along with them despite opinion differences. However, I'm not much there anymore: the battle against the fanatics is futile, and the flame wars and chit-chat take up a lot of space nowadays. And I actually have other things to do.

I read PJM only seldom, and my opinion is that it's pretty much average as portal/blog aggregator - but nothing like the media and advertising revolution its founders envisioned. Propaganda? Well, it's not really a mistery that Charles Johnson, Michelle Malkin and Wretchard (just to name a few) have certain political positions. So one can take their opinions critically - as one should always do. But the theorem:

PJM is "pro-Bush" and They found financers therefore PJM is financed by the Bushes

does not work. It's just another conspiracy.

I read TCS often, and in the light of my scientific and technical knowledge their papers are generally sound. The fact that some author over there may be receiving money from a chemical corporation does not make his or her statements false; it takes some real proof to conclude that.

The right wing isn't untainted, anyway: cruelty, whacky memes, exaggerations and even conspiracies are common occurrences. And something I cannot really stand is the frequent rabid opposition to evolution and whatever science doesn't fit a fundamentalist christian worldview.

But a simple Left-Right (monodimensional) model isn't enough to explain properly the political landscape; one needs at least a bi-dimensional plane if not a three-dimension space. That's why people like me (indipendent ones, I daresay) sometimes closely agree with the "right-wing", but other times not. I rarely agree with the "left-wing" because their main memes (socialism, egalitarianism) have consistently failed. Everytime, everywhere. And even when my proposals have a lefty flavour, generally my motivations are deeply different.

However, whatever axis you are considering the extremes tend to clash. And the more whacked out they are, the strongest the siege mentality becomes. The other side is seen as a monolithic block with no consideration for the individual particularity; then accused of every problem (See: Bush and Katrina; Clinton and the TWA800 accident) and finally dehumanized to the point that "Exterminate those cockroaches" is not a cry of frustration anymore, but rather a serious proposal. In this climate also apocalyptic views flourish: the idea that once the other side (the Left, the Right, the Islamists, the Infidels) is crushed, the Golden Age will return. And this inevitable battle between Good and Evil will cause enormous death and destruction, but it's something that we mere humans cannot avoid, and anyway for those who will survive the world will be full of fluffy bunnies and chocolate rivers. So let's happily push the red button and let the nukes fly. Fanatics on all sides are different only as a matter of degree but they're all of the same kind, this much I know.

This stuff is crazy and not a little worrysome.

Extremization is also a vicious circle: each side becomes more and more radical, often pointing at the other side's radicalism as a justification. Being and indipendent becomes very difficult, because you have to weather brutal attacks from both sides. I've been called fascist, communist (yes, it happened), sexist, dhimmi, arab-hater, anti-semite, racist, warmonger, limp-wristed, phallocrat (sic) and simply stupid or evil only because I refuse to jump on a certain bandwagon. And because I am European Italian - like I was responsible for Mussolini and Hitler. My parents weren't even born in those years, for God's sake.

I try to stay out of all this, but sometimes I'm dragged in - my damn hot blood. And I'm not a patient guy, so when a commenter here started throwing leftist axioms (and ad hominem) at me I rapidly shut down the discussion. Why? Because it wasn't productive in any way; we only discovered that we had no common points to reach a synthesis of our positions.

Will the Left-Right struggle reach a breaking point and become physical? That wouldn't be pretty to watch.

The Incident of the Falling Bullet - 1

There are memes that periodically surface, much like urban legends. One of these is the Killer Falling Bullets: if you fire your weapon upwards, the free-falling bullet will have enough energy to kill or injure someone unlucky enough to get hit.

A while ago on LGF, talking about the upteenth Palestinian shooting-in-the-air party, one commenter wrote something like "Look at the bright side: the falling bullets will kill some of their own children!" I won't comment on the callousness of such statement, but concentrate on the technical and scientific aspects of the issue.

What kills or injures is the kinetic energy of the bullet, energy that is proportional to the mass of the bullets, but also to the square of its velocity: halving the velocity of a bullet will reduce its kinetic energy by a factor four.

The best way to reach a conclusion would be an experimental campaign: firing upwards with a Kalashnikov, and measuring the energy of the returning bullets. But I lack the facilities, and most sadly I lack a Kalashnikov, so I'll try with a mathematical model.

A body falling through air experiences to opposing forces: the gravitational force pulling downwards and the aerodynamic drag directed upwards. The gravitational force remains more or less constant during the entire flight - unless your bullet goes several kilometers up - but the drag force is proportional to the square of velocity: when these two forces balance out, the bullet stops accelerating and falls at a constant limit velocity.

The gravitational force (aka weight) is straightforward to calculate, while drag depends from the atmospheric properties and the shape and size of the falling body. Density and viscosity of air are known, as is the size of a 7.62mm bullet; its shape is a more difficult problem because without the stabilization given by the rifling the projectile will exhibit an irregular motion. However I am confident I can find a proper estimate for the drag coefficient - in the next part. For now, here's an article written by competent people dealing with a closely related problem.

In Exchange

The spineless EUrocowards are once again bending over in front of their moslem masters:

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Five Iraqi women detainees were released Thursday by the U.S. military, FOX News has confirmed. They were among hundreds Iraqi prisoners released after officials found no reason to continue their detention.

Major Gen. Rick Lynch said Thursday the women were released along with more than 400 male prisoners.

The release of the female detainees was also part of a demand by kidnappers who took an American journalist hostage last week. A U.S. officials said the release was unrelated to the kidnappers' demands.

"Unrelated" my ass. The EUroweenies just love paying the jiziya like good dhimmis and they're just happy to release 400 scumbag terrorists that will only proceed to kill more Americans and innocent Iraqis.

But wait a second... It's the U.S. military that released the prisoners... it's all an American affair... well... but...

This piece is satirical, for those in doubt.

Chi Non Sa Taccia

Guai a tornare indietro!

Slow Day

I'm drowsy and blue after a Saturday night out, and there isn't much interesting in the news - oh yes, there would be I'm sure, but I'm not in the mood for deep analysis and/or gloomy news about Nuclear Mullahs and the whole lot.

The whale that swam up the Thames to Battersea Bridge has died despite the rescue attempts. Whales are mammals adapted to marine life and (thus ?) far more intelligent than your average fish, but rarely beached or stranded whales survive even when they did not end up there as a result of injury. It's almost like they adopt this self-destructive behaviour because they want to die. Food for thought.

I also noticed that the BBC uses always the same tone, whether they're reporting about a whale rescue operation, or non-combatants blown to pieces by suicide bombers. This is more like nihilism than neutrality.

Lei Crede, Io Deduco

In particolare lei afferma:

Bound to Happen

Imperial select on ability. In some faculties there are concerns about how few white students there are. Jane Gibbs, our (Imperial's) Widening Participation Officer, has said in some instances the white working class male is in the minority," said Thody.
Heh ®.

Take a walk along the college's main walkway if you don't believe (it's public access). But you'd better learn some Chinese first. Diversity Cultists never let go, however:
The Guardian recently disclosed figures from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) which it stated "reveal a deeply worrying racial divide amongst British universities". The report singled out Imperial as having very few students of Afro-Caribbean origin. Imperial has one of the highest proportions of ethnic minorities (mostly international students), however the HESA state that Imperial has only 15 Black Caribbean students (including British students of Black Caribbean descent).[...] In an accompanying Guardian article, Trevor Phillips, Chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) and Imperial Alumnus, said "This survey gives new meaning to institutionalised racism" and it is "beyond doubt" that segregation is taking place between universities in Britain.
Yes, if you inanely consider a lack of equal results as proof of racism. Typical Guardian. Silly me, I thought that equal opportunities were the way to go.

At least someone is questioning their statements on the basis of facts - although it's terribly hard to escape the quagmire of political correctness:
Michael Bajomo, Vice President of the Imperial College Union's African Caribbean Society (ACS), criticised the figures provided by HESA. He told Felix that the ACS had over 300 members; although they weren't all of Afro-Caribbean decent, he said he knew more than 15 students personally. He questioned the validity of the UCAS-derived statistics as students are under no obligation to declare their ethnic origin when applying to university. (Thanks heavens! - ed.)

He believes the real problem at Imperial is the "lack of British minorities" and believes there is a predominance of white middle class students. "The number of black British students at Imperial must be in single figures" he continued.
I can see quite a number of black people around here, but from their accents they appear to be mostly African, true.

And now let's sing "We Are Inclusive" all together:
Imperial seriously considers widening participation, some staff are recruited with the sole purpose of raising aspirations and conducting mock interviews with underrepresented groups. Lindi Galloway, Imperial's Director of Access, said, "Our strategy is to reach as many people as possible, particularly from non-traditional areas including people who are not used to applying, to show them what's on offer and help raise aspirations. It has been highly effective in terms of gaining applications from students who might never have come to Imperial. We've been working on it solidly for six years and are starting to see the first students come through the system."
Who are these "underrepresented" groups? Chavs, urban scum? Folks with a talent for laying bricks but nothing else? Laying bricks properly is a respectable work in itself, but you don't need to know advanced mathematics for it.

At least sanity still prevails in the end:
Controversially, Cambridge University has introduced a positive discrimination quota system in an attempt to widen access to minority groups. Thody told Felix, "Imperial College have not operated quotas, that was a very high level decision. It's quite a dangerous game to get into; Cambridge and LSE have been doing it. LSE have been secretly playing with quotas, in certain areas they've taken a lot of black students." She assured Felix that at Imperial, admissions are based solely on ability and are open to all.
I'll state it again: ethnic quotas and positive discrimination are racism, even if compassionate. The non-racist way is equal opportunities and rights under a strongly ability-based admission system. And results will be different because individuals are different. That's all.

Another Addition

Welcome to the Pious Agnostic, that was so kind to link me.

I'm afraid I cannot retrieve the name of an Italian blogger who linked me as well. I hope I can fix this soon.

And now, a website that cannot miss from the linkagery of any respectable geekish fan of B-grade movies, computer games(I used to be - Quake...) and weird stuff from Japan: SOMETHING AWFUL!

That website is guaranteed to be offensive for vast numbers of people; particularly religious conservatives, prudes, obese and midgets. And these are recommendations.

George Galloway made a complete ass of himself on Celebrity Big Brother.

Good if people finally give him the boot, but in my opinion being in cahoots with Arab dictators and Islamists is much worse than being utterly stupid/submissive pervert.

Strange Traffic

Just another quickie, because work is still taking most of my time.

Today what I found in my traffic logs isn't so fun: I got a visit from Egypt, IP 196.202.80.#, with the search string "free informations about detection of explosives ,mines using dogs" ( search.yahoo.com).

It occurred at 22:05 EET (UTC+2:00) of Jan 12. I leave conclusions to my readers.

Parole e Fatti

Ma all'atto pratico?

Up Armor Me

There is another round (albeit low-key) of the (body) armor for US troops in Iraq controversy going on.

The main problem with the statement of that Kos Kid and other similar ones is that they seem pretty ignorant about the issue at hand. Apparently, some people think that armor (body or vehicle) is used to jump into the battle with guns blazing ignoring all that the enemy can throw at you because you impenetrable shell will protect you. But in reality, that would be a rather unwise tactic; armor serves more to save the day in case you get hit despite your best efforts to the contrary. In other words, the best way to survive is avoiding to be hit rather than confiding in your armor - because a lot of factors, including bad luck, can send things to hell.

Another point is that adding armor also adds weight and bulk (and cost), thus reducing mobility. This means that a tradeoff has to be found between mobility and strength, and there are good reasons to think that being lighter and more mobile is a better choice, giving more overall combat effectivness (that includes returning fire, spotting and chasing the enemy etc).

There is no conceivable body armor that can protect a soldier from a direct hit with heavy weapons or the detonation of an explosive device (often, a few 155mm HE shells rigged together) at close range. Even the best EOD suits are far from invulnerable, and they severely limit mobility (a full one weighs over 30 kg) - not to mention the torture of wearing such a contraption in hot climates. Moreover, the concussion produced by a shockwave or high-energy projectile striking the armor suit can be enough to injure or kill even if penetration does not occur. Yes, forcing the enemy to spend a RPG or a 12.7 mm (14.5 mm if they use Russian hardware) bullet to kill a grunt would place them in a worse logistical situation, but it's a rather phyrric victory.

I think that Humvees, trucks and tractors genuinely required up-armoring, but that happened because those vehicles were initially designed to be used in the rear, where it was supposed they would not take fire (and nothing can give enough protection against a nuclear blast anyway). But in the Iraqi theater there is almost no safe rear, and that meant vehicles took a lot of fire. Up-armoring was due, but those Humvees now suffer of performance, braking and stability problems because of the added weight. I think that completely revised models are being produced, but it will take time for all vehiclesto be replaced.

This does not mean that body and vehicle armor is useless; far from it. But it's not a magic shell that will save soldiers from any and all threats, that's the point. Of course that Kos Kid sees the issue only through her own ideological lens, and flings accusations against the bureocracy (not Bush, for once!), does not care about the cost of upgraded body armor and asks for more taxes to pay the bill. Leaving aside whether she truly supports the troops or not, her proposals are rather simplistic to say the least.

However, there are LGF commenters too quick to dismiss the issue (especially the Humvee armor or lack thereof) only because it comes from a certain side of the political spectrum. It's like they are afraid of conceding even one single tiny point to the Left. I think that it isn't a productive stance; agreeing with a statement from someone or some party does not mean agreeing with everything they say.

Back in Town

Yes, here I am in London again. Not exceedingly happy, but neither down - I just have to get used to the metropolis again.

However, my traffic has plummeted to a pitiful thirty hits per day! I have to climb back to more comfortable heights, and I'll use a time-honored method: girls and scandals. For the girls, two classics:

Chiaki Kuriyama

Lucy Liu*

For the scandals... well, you'll have to wait a bit longer... but dirt sells.

* That website is tamer than it may appear.

UPDATE: It's really curious, the deluge of hits for pics of girls went as suddenly as it came. I thought it was because of the Christmas and New Year holidays, but now they're over. These days my visits come mainly from links in other blogs, and search strings such as "italian swearing" and "ammonium nitrate" and related stuff. And possibly, people who added The Italian Version to their favorites.
